Operation Black Hills Cabin
Custer, SD nonprofit founded in 2011 by a retired military couple that provides post-9/11 combat-injured veterans and their immediate families a week-long, fully handicap-accessible cabin respite in the Black Hills at little or no cost; the org says 178 families from 38 states have stayed.

- Free — lodging is at no cost; several local restaurants offer free or reduced meals and many area attractions offer free or reduced admission. Transportation to and from is the family's responsibility, with partial travel reimbursement given upon arrival.

- Veterans or active-duty members who served in any post-9/11 military operation and are combat-injured at a minimum of 30%, or are Medal of Honor recipients, or are Soldier Recovery Unit/Warrior Transition Unit members; immediate family per the VA award letter or a VA-certified caregiver may accompany.

- Operates late May through September; week-long respites run from noon Sunday to 9 a.m. the following Saturday and are scheduled on a first-come basis; about 20 families hosted per year.
